Mahesh is the founder and visionary behind the concept of ShariaUMEX. He is a non Muslim, however has spent a large part of his life in association with Muslims around the world.
Mahesh is a British national who has held a number of Directorships in both private and public limited companies. He has a wide range of experience in finance and commerce having worked as a stock broker for two of Wall Street’s leading firms over a 12 year period. He has been involved, for the last 10 years, with a number international technology companies working with companies in both in developed and developing countries as well as with several start up companies and advised on the developed and deployment of several products on the global market.
He is the Founder and Chairman of Halal Industries Group plc and also recently initiated the Children’s Charity, Innocent Colours, to address the plight of displaced children and single mothers in extreme poverty.
ShariaUMEX is the brainchild of Mahesh and he has brought together an excellent team of financial professionals and strategic partners to run and operate this exciting venture.
He foresees that ShariaUMEX will play a strategic and significant role in the development of Islamic finance in the coming years.
Per Bergstrom
Per Bergstrom is a successful technology and telecoms entrepreneur and investor, pioneering operations stretching from Scandinavia to the Americas. As former CEO and Founder of successful Cybercom Group, an IT/Telecoms consultant company with offices in Denmark, India, Sweden, Singapore, Poland and the UK, Bergstrom helped lift Cybercom on to the Stockholm Stock Exchange O-list in 1999.
Currently, he is the Chairman of digital advertising solutions provider Timecut AB (Plc) and Swedish listed IT/Telecoms content provider Servage AB.
Abdul Malik Bin Abul Kassim
Abdul Malik Kassim age 55, born in Penang, graduated in Public Administration from Mara Institute of Technology. He has had extensive experience in various level of Business Management from managing small and medium scale companies to a multi-national electronic company. He started his career over 30 years agor with a Multi-National Japanese chemical company and there-after managed a member of companies including housing development, construction, construction material trading, electrical engineering, food packing, multi-national electronics and Travel & Tours.
He was involved in a number of International Business Development Projects in Middle East mainly in Saudi Arabia before being elected as a member of Penang State Legislative Assembly and being appointed as State Minister for Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs after the last general election in March 2008.
With his wide experience and background, Abd Malik was entrusted by the Chief Minister of Penang to drive the development of the State’s Penang International Halal Hub initiative. He currently leads as Chairman of the Penang International Halal Hub Taskforce, and also is Chairman of the Penang International Halal Hub Development the state arm for development and promotion of halal initiative.

Sheikh Hussain Hamid Hassan (Chairman)
Dr. Hassan served as a Professor of Shariah in the Faculty of Law and Economics at Cairo University between 1960 and 2002. Currently, he chairs numerous Shariah supervisory committees. Dr Hassan has authored twenty-one books on Islamic law, finance, economics, social studies and art, in addition to more than 400 research articles on these subjects.

Dr Humayon Dar
Dr Humayon Dar is amongst the foremost Sharia technicians in the world today, renowned for pioneering numerous industry setting innovative techniques in Islamic banking and finance, his name is synonymous with many of the most sophisticated Islamic products currently on offer. Well networked with leading royal and industrialist Muslim families, he is one of the globe’s key liaison figures in bringing leading Western financial institutions exposure to the world’s most distinguished Sharia scholars. Known as a champion for integrating Islamic banking and finance in the mainstream financial markets, he continues to play the role of a catalyst in bridging the gap between Islamic and conventional finance.
Dr Dar belongs to the first generation of qualified Islamic economists, with formal training in conventional and Islamic economics, as well as classical Islamic jurisprudence at the International Islamic University Islamabad, where he was personally tutored by the world’s leading Islamic economists, jurists and thinkers. His higher studies include an MPhil and PhD (both in Economics) from Cambridge University where he conducted research on Islamic finance. His post-doctoral research has exclusively been on Islamic economics, banking and finance.
As a technical member of BMB Islamic’s Sharia Supervisory Board, he also participates in Sharia coordination in addition to his various roles as CEO of BMB Islamic. Before founding BMB Islamic, he developed Dar Al Istithmar (a majority-owned subsidiary of Deutsche Bank) into a Euro money award winning team of acclaimed Islamic financial innovators. Prior to that, Dr Dar was involved in setting up a first of its type MSc course in Islamic Economics, Banking & Finance at Loughborough University. Lately, he has helped Cass Business School (City University London) in offering an Executive MBA in Islamic Finance. He also holds an Honorary Fellowship in Islamic Finance at the School of Government & International Affairs, University of Durham UK.
Deeply committed to the industry, Dr Dar’s other appointments are numerous. Amongst others, he currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Arab British Chamber of Commerce, and also serves as an Honorary Senior Visiting Fellow at Cass Business School. He sits on the Sharia Supervisory Committees of Hong Leong Islamic Bank Malaysia and Allianz Global Investors Germany.
He is also associated with Institute of Islamic Banking & Insurance and is a member of the editorial board of its flagship publication New Horizon. A prolific author, he sits on the editorial boards of Review of Islamic Economics and International Journal of Islamic Financial Services.
Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki

Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki is an Islamic Financial Consultant serving as Shariah Advisor at Affin Islamic Bank, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Prior to this, he was an Assistant Professor at the Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).
He received his first degree in Accounting from International Islamic University Malaysia. After having been awarded as the Best Accounting Graduate of IIUM, Malaysian Association of Certified Public Accountant (MACPA) and Harvard Business School Alumni Club, he joined IIUM as an Assistant Lecturer. He then pursued his Master degree in Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance at Loughborough University United Kingdom in 2001. Immediately after completing his Master with distinction, he started his PhD in the same area. He successfully obtained his PhD in Islamic Banking and Finance from Loughborough University less than 3 years in 2005.
His research interests include Islamic economics, Islamic banking and finance, Takaful, corporate social responsibility and corporate governance.
Dr Dusuki has published in numerous international and local refereed academic journals and presented papers at both local and several international conferences including London, Berlin, Dubai, Tehran, Singapore, Jakarta and Brunei.
He also conducts training in Islamic banking and finance related areas to officers of Central Bank of Malaysia, banking practitioners, government officials and public.
